Zantac lawsuits were being filed because people who took the drug, which contained the active ingredient ranitidine. This ingredient is linked to an increased risk of cancer. The drug contains N-Nitrosodimethylamine, or NDMA, which increases the longer the drug sits on the shelf. The FDA asked manufacturers to remove the drug from shelves in April of 2020. What Is the Latest Update on the Zantac Lawsuits?
The MDL judge dismissed the cases in December of 2022, saying there was not enough evidence to link Zantac to cancer. Plaintiffs will appeal this decision. Bellwether trials scheduled in California and Florida in 2023 will help indicate how much a settlement could be worth.
Has There Been a Zantac Settlement?
No. At this time there have been no settlements in the Zantac lawsuit. One plaintiff in Illinois did voluntarily dismiss his case when generic drug makers offered to settle his claim. Settlements are based on claimants injuries, monetary damage, and many other factors.
How Do I Qualify for a Zantac Lawsuit?
If you think you may qualify, then you need to speak with a Zantac lawyer. Generic ranitidine is not being considered for lawsuits at this time.
You need to meet several conditions:
- Have less than 20 years between the cancer diagnosis and the last time Zantac was taken
- Be younger than 89 before your first cancer diagnosis
- Have taken brand name Zantac for one year before a cancer diagnosis
- Have a diagnosis of bladder, esophageal, liver, pancreatic, or stomach cancer
- Used Zantac weekly for at least one year
How Much Is a Lawsuit Worth?
So far, no settlement amounts have been disclosed because there have only been individual lawsuits. However, if you are eligible to file a lawsuit and win your case, you should be compensated for lost wages, medical expenses related to your treatment, and pain and suffering. If you file on behalf of a loved one who has died as the result of cancer caused by this drug, compensation should include funeral expenses as well.
