The task force started off their report with “At its core the law is fine as it is. All persons who are conducting themselves in a lawful manner have a fundamental right to stand their ground in defend themselves from attack with proportionate force in every place they have a lawful right to be.”
The controversial law was brought into the national limelight one year ago today. Travon Martin was shot and killed in Sanford Florida in use of Florida’s controversial law. George Zimmerman, the person who had invoked said law, and sparked debate, is still on trial.
Lieutenant Governor Jennifer Carrol , two lawmakers who had created the bill, police, lawyers and neighborhood watch volunteers were selected for the task force. However, proponents of the law had criticized the selected people for the task force citing that it was unlikely any changes would be suggested.
However, two persons from the task force has submitted formally in letter that they had wished the group would push for more stringent changes. The two members were Miami-Dade State attorney Katherine Fernández Rundle and Tallahassee-based pastor Rev. R.B. Holmes.
Currently there are several bills in the State Legislature to repeal the Stand Your Ground Law, although none of them are likely to move far in the largely gun supporting legislature.
