Talc, or talcum powder, was used in many common products such as baby powder, make-up, lotions, deodorant, and feminine hygiene products. This material is often harvested from locations near the mineral asbestos, which causes cancers. What Is the Talcum Powder Mass Tort Lawsuit?
More than 20 studies since 1971 have linked use of talcum powder to the development of ovarian cancer. Based on analysis of some of these studies, women who use talcum powder are 33% more likely to develop cancer than women who do not use talcum powder. Women who use talcum powder when ovulating may be at an even higher risk of developing cancers.
The theory is that, when talcum powder is used near the genitals it can embed in ovarian tissue, and this can lead to cancerous tumors and other illnesses. The National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society describe talcum powder as a risk factor for ovarian cancer when it is used near the genitals.
The lawsuit alleges that since at least 1982 Johnson & Johnson knew that their talc products may cause cancer but did not warn their consumers or label their products in a way that reflects the warnings of the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society.
Lawsuits also claim that Johnson & Johnson was aware of asbestos contamination for at least 40 years, kept this information from the public, did not remove contaminated items from sale, and did not put any warnings on its packaging. Currently, at least 13,000 lawsuits are pending against Johnson & Johnson and other talc manufacturers.
